   Frederick Scalise, 82, of East Long Meadow, Massachusetts died June 23, 2000. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his beloved family: Wife Alma (Wood) Scalise; two sons, Fred W. of Elmira, Oregon and John E. of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan; a daughter, Laura J. Sullivan of Blandford, Massachusetts; nine grandchildren and a brother, Anthony F. Scalise of West Springfield, Massachusetts.
   He was a graduate of the former Springfield Technical High School in 1936. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from American International College in 1941.
   Frederick was a member of company B, 104th Infantry 25th Division of the Massachusetts National Guard from 1936 to 1939.
   He was on guard duty in the downtown Springfield area during the aftermath of the 1938 hurricane and resulting flooding.
    Frederick was a decorated World War II Army Air Force veteran. He was a combat bombardier (crew photo) with the rank of 1st lieutenant. He was attached to the 15th Air Force, 464th Bombardment Group, 776 Squadron. Frederick flew missions in southern and central Europe and Germany in a B-24 bomber.
   In April 1945, in support of the the U.S. 5th Army and the British 8th Army, he participated in saturation bombing missions against large German troop concentrations in Northern Italy. Flying in close formations, the B-24s dropped massive amounts of anti-personnel bombs just a few thousand yards over enemy lines.
   For his service, he was awarded the Air Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster, the Victory Medal and the European Campaign Medal with four Battle Stars.
   Frederick was employed with the Criminal Intelligence Division of the Internal Revenue Service for 30 years. 20 years as an Investigator-Special Agent, and 10 years as a Group Manager, supervising special agents in Hartford, New Haven and Waterbury, Connecticut. He also participated in the Justice Department's drive against Organized Crime.
   He retired from government service on 31 December 1977. After retirement, he conducted a tax and business consulting service.
   Frederick was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE); an association of former members of the 464th Bomb Group and an association of former aerial bombardiers (Bombardiers, Inc.).
    Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 28 at Byron Funeral Home in Springfield. Interment was at Hillcrest Park Cemetery.
