Bill was awarded the Purple Heart after being struck in the
cheek by a piece of flak while on a mission. One of the two times Bill was forced to bail
out after being shot down he suffered a broken back, but he was not awarded a second
Purple Heart as there was no blood shed at the time of that injury.

Bill was interned in Switzerland the second time he was shot
down. The surviving crew members made it to Switzerland to be interned. This is Bill's
identification badge from the internment.

All of these items sat in storage until I went through them in 2000
and surprised my grandfather with this shadow box from our entire family.
